The small beach and enclosed harbour make this a perfect place for your children to play, paddle or even canoe. There are rock pools full of mini beasts and a plethora of crabs waiting to be tricked by your bacon rind AGAIN. The pub in the harbour offers the perfect vantage point at the end of the day when the kids still want to be on the beach.

The North Yorkshire Coast offers so many opportunities to explore. Beaches, vast, small, deserted, busy or scattered with fossils. Stunning clifftops and quaint villages, towns large and small, steam trains, art galleries, museums, vintage shops, cafes and deli’s. But if you really want to explore the alleys and snickets of Staithes try the Treasure Trail.

Staithes is situated on the Cleveland Way National Trail, 110 miles from Helmsley to Filey. If its perfect Devonesque beaches you want, try the 2.5mile walk to Runswick Bay. For the perfect tea and butties looking out to sea on a blustery day we love to go to the Sandside Cafe at Sandsend, a bit more of a stretch at about 7.5 miles.

There is so much to discover on the North Yorkshire coast it’s worth turning off the main road and seeing what you find.

For an authentic seaside town experience take a 10 minute trip up to Saltburn-on-Sea with its Victorian Pier and the oldest surviving water balanced cliff lift still in operation in the country. Or if you have a budding palaeontologist, discover what has been unearthed on the Jurassic Coast over the years at Whitby Museum

Our favourite subject and you can’t go wrong with our local pub The Cod and Lobster. Stumbling distance from the house, there is something on this ever changing menu for everyone from scallops to fish and chips and steak pie to lobster. You know that catch has come straight from the sea. Dotties does the ultimate afternoon tea, it’s a meal, be prepared. Betsy and Bo sells every essential delicacy you didn’t realise you needed on holiday, olive tapenade anyone? Of course you are only 20 minutes away from everything Whitby has to offer. Our favourites include the White, Horse and Griffin for Sunday lunch, The Magpie for fish and chips and The Star in The Harbour, well for everything else.
